June 10, 2010 - Pine Valley
I think most in our group played Pine Valley Golf Course in Southington CT for the first time in 2010. A nice park like layout, well groomed, and overall in very nice shape would be how I would describe the course. I would definitely like to play again at Pine Valley. Playing on this day were the N, Walt, Dan F, DP, Phil, Mike McQ, Joe ?, and DaHacker. Leading the way was yours truly and the N with 98's, with Dan chipping in with a 101, then Joe, Mike and Phil all shot a 108, then daHacker with a 128, and Walt finished with a 136. After golf I believe it was myself, the N, and DaHacker who truly enjoyed our time eating and drinking but especially being served by the lovely Crista. I think we would join a league there if she was guaranteed to be our bartender every week! Would be nice if Grassy Hill could hire her! Then again any women will be improvement over the farmhand who ruins every man's fantasy about a cowgirl or farmers daughter......

June 24, 2010 - Quarry Ridge

Always a fun course to play and no one got kicked off a bowling team at this years outing. Leading the way was FM with a 84, right behind was Dan and Dave both shooting 85, then JO with a 87, the N with a 88, and Phil with 89. Jim and Walt both came in with 116's. Good grub and brews were had at the restaurant at the course after our golf. A fun time had by all and some nice scores...

July 8, 2010 - Tower Ridge
FM, Mike McQ, Walt, Bob, Dan F, DaHacker, Phil, and DP played Tower Ridge Country Club. Leading the way was FM with a 97, then Bob chipped in with a 98, DP shot a 99, Dan F came in with a 100, Phil played to a 104, Mike McQ shot a 114, Walt came in with a 124, and Jimbo hacked in with a 131. Can't give the course any high marks for this outing as they gave us tee times that conflicted with a 9 hole late day scramble so the scores for us in the second group had to be prorated as we were unable to play the last 2 holes. I will say of the courses we play each season I won't be heartbroken about not playing it again if not on the card or whatever reason.

Annual Shennecossett Outing
August 19, 2010
A fine August day it turned out to be for our annual trip to Shenny and as usual it was a fun day had by all! Attending this year's outing were JO, daHacker, Walt, Mike McQ, Bob, Phil, The N, Jim Pellitere, and DP. The author is biased and may be the English blood in me but I always think this is one of our best outings each year as I truly enjoy playing this links like course even if those damn fairway bunkers bite me in the ass at least once every time I play here. Leading the way for our trip was Bob with a 88, yours truly right behind with a 90, the N chipped in with a 94, Jim Pellitere shot a 98, JO almost breaks 100 shooting 100, Phil shot a 105, Mike McQ chipped in with a 108, Walt shot a 126, and daHacker kills it for a 127. After a fun filled day on the links was followed up with a load of fun, good grub, and great drinks at the restaurant on the course. I look forward to the 2011 trip!

August 26, 2010
the N, Phil, Bob, Mike McQ, daHacker, Dan F, and DP played on a spectacular end of summer day at Rockledge Golf Club. Leading the way on this fine afternoon/evening was yours truly with a 86, Dan F was right there hitting bombs off the tee with a 88, then the N and Bob chipped in 93's, Phil shot a nice 97, then Mike McQ muttering something about not letting Jimbo beat came in with a 106, and DaHacker had possibly his round of the season with a 114. Another fun day of golf was followed up with some beer and cheer at the restaurant on the course and I must say Rockledge is always been a nice course to play and this year was no exception.

Leaving the last 3 holes to determine an overall winner and Jimbo remained hot leading him and his son to win holes 16 & 17 taking the overall competition and the beer after the competition. After golf we went to New Britain for some German grub and brew at the East Side Restaurant. If you are looking for authentic German food and overall experience you should try it out.

Oct 7, 2010
Dan Gray, Mike McQ, Walt, and DP played Long Hill in East Hartford CT. First time for the group except for Dan playing the course and other than it was wet due to torrential rains the night before it was in good condition and a nice layout where if you can keep it straight you should score well. Leading the way was Dan with a 91, the DP chipped in with a 94, Mike McQ shot a 108, and Walt came in with a 127. After the golf we headed to the Berlin turnpike and had a fun evening of beer and grub at Hooters. Neither group was in the running for winning as we were +3 and I believe JO's group was +2. It was a great day for golf with exceptional weather, good course conditions, and a fun scramble tourney. After the fun a nice dinner was held at the Savin Rock Conf center, a fun very well run tournament for a good cause.

October 21, 2010
Turned out to be a nice Fall golf day except for those 15 minutes when we had to hunker down as a strong fast cold front moved through with lots of rain, thunder, and WIND!. Before and After the weather was great for playing golf and we had most of the course to ourselves. Playing on this fine day were DP, Mike McQ, Walt, FM, the N, Phil, Bob, and the Hacker. We played the White and Blue sets of 9 holes with Bob leading the way with a 85, FM and DP right behind shooting 86's, the N chipped in with a 96, Mike McQ shot a 102, Phil shot a 107, Walt came in with a 122, and then DaHacker comes in with a 123. After the golf we had some great chow at a local tavern/restaurant hopefully someone remembers the name for our next trip out to Blue Fox.

Every year my Pop and me try to get out around his birthday and JO and Bob joined us on this chilly damp Nov day to play 18 at Tradition. Due to course construction we had to play the front 9 twice but we still got out there and Bob led the way shooting a 88, I chipped in with a 93, JO shot a 99, and JP struggled but I think had a nice time shooting a 125. Me and Pop had a nice dinner somewhere in North Haven and I hope we can continue doing this around his birthday for years to come

Gang plays 18 at Orange Hills Country Club!
October 1, 2009
A cool, blustery day with highs in the upper 50's set the tone for our two foursomes on this fall day in Orange, CT. The first foursome of DaHacker, The N, Phil Tortora, and Mike Ricci Sr. went off at about 12:30 with the second foursome of DP, Fredo, JohnnyO, and Mike McQ right behind them all day :>) The course overall was in great shape with the greens on the medium speed side, lush fairways, tee boxes in good shape, and reasonable lengths of rough. The course is one that the more you play it the better handle on how you should play it will come to you with holes with severe dog legs, uphill, downhill shots, fairways that slope towards the rough, etc. Course favors those with skilled shot making ability. The course is easily walked with only a couple holes requiring an effort going up a hill or two. I would rate the course an 8.0 on a 1 -10 scale being that while I enjoy playing it I think it has been over priced if paying regular greens fees during the season and they don't do a good job in spacing the tee times apart as the course seems to get crowded due to slow play which because of its design tee times should be further apart than every 7 minutes.
After golf the entire crew went back to JO's place in West Haven for subs, brews, and cards. Thanks to FatchaGaloop and DaHacker for picking up the subs from Capettas. After eats, drinks, and the such we played poker for a few hours. The luck was nothing but bad for Mike McQuade who couldn't pull a hand all night long. As always it was a great time at the links and the festivities afterward made for a totally enjoyable day and evening with good friends.

Our Annual SHENNECOSSET Excursion!
Sept 17, 2009
Despite a bleak forecast for days preceding our trip to Groton the weather Gods changed their minds on Wed before and a High Pressure system held most of the rain to our south and we had an excellent day of golf with only a few sprinkles for about a hole. Making the trip was Jimbo, Walt, Mike McQuade, Noel, Jim Pelletier, Gerry, Dick, DP, Mike Ricci, Dan Gray, and John. As far as courses I have played Shenny is no doubt one of my favorites and I easily rate it a 9.5 on a 1-10 scale. The course is a links style course with one of the most picturesque holes in the state, the par 4 16th hole with its green back dropped by passing sail boats, slow and fast speed ferries, Coast Guard ships, and the occasional submarine. On this day the course played short or long depending on the hole as the breeze definitely affected play making for a true links weather day along with the passing shower, and in and out sun. Most of the tee boxes were in great shape, as were the fairways, and greens. The only complaint I heard and concur with was some of the sand traps lacked proper amounts of sand making them all the more difficult which they didn't require as they were traditional links bunkers that were deep and tough getting out of requiring on some to go side ways as you best shot.
Now the results: The N and myself had the low scores with 89's (dam bunkers on the last 2 holes!), Dan chipped in with a 90 (my bet for low score), Jim Pelletier and Gerry came in with 94's, Dick shot a 97, Mike Ricci shot a 102, John shot a 113, Mike McQuade shot a 116, DaHacker surprising played fairly well with a 126, and new golfer Walt came in with a 139. Winning closest to the hole on the Par 3 170 yard 15th hole was Dan Gray as the only man on the green. Winning our pool for the difference between high score and low score was Jim Pelletier predicting 50 on the dot coming in on the exact number. I would say the golf was fun filled and great time had by all.....
After the golfing the entire group stayed and ate at the restaurant on the course. The food and drink were very good and the wait staff was attractive (I think Noel left?), very attentive and social able. All in all the yearly event was a great time, fun filled, with good friends! I look forward to it next year!
Note: A damper to our good time was reported as Dan Gray's car was broken into and his GPS, and some other items were stolen. A unfortunate commentary on our society is that we, our friends, family, possessions are never completely safe from those who want to commit crimes. As someone who in the past also had my car broken into this further reminds me to always lock the doors, never leave any valuables in the car, and never think it can't happen to me. My regrets go out to Dan and I only hope this incident won't keep him from playing with us next year as I'm sure one of us can give you a ride!

Playing in the Cow Pasture
Sept 3, 2009
Jimbo, The N, and yours truly DP played 18 holes at Banner Golf Club in Moodus, CT. It was a nice summer hot and humid day for the three duffers who made the trek out to play. For those who have never played Banner......... don't bother making the trip......as the money saved in gas would be better used to play a more local course. The course could be nice if money was spent on it but at this point I would say its only worth playing if you live near it for practice at a good price. The tees and greens were the only places that see any water and the fairways are browned, full of crab grass and weeds, and generally not consistent in grooming or play. The same can be said for the greens with some in great shape and others not so good with inconsistent grasses. On a scale of 1-10 I would give the course a 3 with a couple redeeming qualities in that its very walk able course and very reasonably priced making it an ideal course for new golfers or practice for any golfer trying new shots as the course is very forgiving on errant shots. I have never given a course a 1 or a 2 and would compare this one to the old Millstone course in Milford from years ago.
The results were the N took low score shooting a 90, DP chipped in with a 94, and Jimbo shot the worst golf I have ever seen by someone who plays fairly regularly shooting a 155, yes a 155.... I don't think he'll be able to ever shoot that high again as by the end of the round I think his arms were going to fall off.
After the round we drove down to East Haddam for dinner and ate at Gelston House on the outdoor patio overlooking the river. The food was excellent as was the brews and company.

Three play 9 holes at Hunter Golf Club
Aug 27, 2009:
Jimbo, Dan F, and DP played the front 9 holes at Hunter Golf Course in Meriden, CT. It was a nice Thur evening for golf with partly sunny skies and temps in the mid 70's playing one of this duffer's favorite courses to play in CT. We got out at about 5:20 which turns out even playing at a reasonable pace is a little late this time of year to get in 9 holes of daylight. For those who haven't played Hunter it's a municipal course that is reasonably priced, generally always in good condition from tees to greens, and very playable for all levels of golfers. This week the course was dry as for a change we have had some heat here in CT and not a lot of rain making the fairways run and the greens tough to hold approach shots. I rate Hunter a 8.5 on 1-10 scale as it's a fun course, reasonably priced, courteous staff, and a nice walking course for duffers like me who will always choose to walk if possible. And with a great 19th hole for drink and great food this would be a choice to play again and again.
Results for the evening were Dan F. with a 44 starting out birdie, par on the first 2 holes, yours truly DP came in with a 48, and daHacker shot a respectable 63.

Three take on the heat and play 18 holes at Blue Fox Run
Aug 19, 2009:
Jimbo, Fredo, and yours truly played 18 holes on one of the hottest day of 2009 at Blue Fox Run in Avon, CT. We went out at about 1:20 at the height of the heat on this day it hit 91 in the center of the state and it felt just like a nice Florida day. I think daHacker didn't enjoy the high temps as he looked at the end of the round like someone who just ran a marathon.... Blue Fox is one of the yearly courses we play that I enjoy as it's another nice courses you can walk fairly easily and it plays pretty fair from tee to green. We played the Red 9 and then the White 9 for our 18 holes. The course was in very good condition with fast (not too fast), slightly undulating, true greens that were receptive to most approach shots. The fairways were great, the traps had soft sand, the tee boxes were in good shape, the first cut of rough was very playable, water comers and the only negative this reporter will report was a lack of coolers with water on the course was very disappointing along with the Beer Girl not showing up until 1/2 way through our 2nd nine holes. I would give the course a 8.5 overall on a 1-10 scale and recommend to anyone that they play this fun, fair course for players of all skill levels.
Thanks to FM's game being slightly off I was able to tie him with us both shooting 94 on this day. And you would think the heat that seemed to almost kill DaHacker would have had an adverse effect on his score yet he had his best score of the season in CT with a 129. JP had 2 pars on the day with an easy birdie attempt on one of those after getting to 5 ft from the cup on a 200 yard par 3 off the tee but he came up short with the putt and the expletives were understandable. FM had 4 pars and DP came in with 2 pars.
And just like the week before the eats at the 19th were good and reasonably priced and the Long Trails tasted real good!

Crew plays 18 at Manchester Country Club
Aug 13, 2009:
Jimbo, Mike McQuade, Larry, John, Dan Fairchild, and Dave played Manchester Country Club for all but Larry for the first time. The weather for the day was temps in low 80's, overcast and humid with a brief light shower during the round. The mosquitoes loved the weather and were in full force buzzing in around and all over the course which was the only negative of the day (and the last 2 holes for the author). I would describe the course as a New England style course very playable for all skill levels and overall very fair. I would definitely play the course again and would rate it a 8.2 on a 1-10 scale. Very nice walk able course, fair greens, fairly wide fairways on the longer holes, and a fair amount of shorter ones giving players who aren't as long good opportunities to score well. One negative was no beer at the turn or any beer girl on the course.
Leading the way were Larry and Dan shooting 90, Dave came in with a 99 (7 over on last 2 holes DOH!), Mike McQuade chipped in with a 105, John shot a 109, an daHacker was 7 under JimboPar at 137. Dan had 5 pars, Larry had 6 pars and 1 birdie, Mike had 1 par, Dave had a couple pars, and sorry Pop from your card nothing to talk about....
Good eats at the 19th, reasonable priced, the Long Trails tasted real good!

Nine holes at the Giant
Aug 6, 2009:
DP, JP, FM, and MR Sr. played a nine hole best ball match with Dave & Mike squaring off against Fred and DaHacker with Dave and Mike victorious making that first pitcher sure taste good at Aunt Chiladas! Fred led the way shooting a 40, DP just behind (damn double on the 9th) at 41, with MR chipping in at 51 and JP hacking to a generous 66. Highlights of the round were Mike with a birdie on 8 and a par on 1, Dave with pars on 1,3, 4, and Fredo with pars on 2, 6, 8, and 9. The weather couldn't have been better for an early August day which is saying a lot this summer! And the food and grub after was good too! As always a fun day playing golf with good friends.

Summer finally comes to CT and some of the crew hits the links at Tower Ridge Country Club.
July 22, 2009:
A beautiful sunny day in the low 80's with moderate humidity comes to CT as we played 18 holes at picturesque Tower Ridge in Simsbury, CT. This day's golfing crew consisted of Walt, Phil, Mike M, Jimbo, Fred, and yours truly Dave. We went off the back nine at about 1:45 and 1:55 finishing up around 7. The course was busy with a scramble tournament that began earlier in the day and plenty of normal daily play along with cart paths only due to heavy rains yesterday making overall play slow. The course as always been my experience was in great overall condition. Tower Ridge is always a fun course to play with some holes leaving you shaking your head or happy if you conquer them along with many very playable holes for all level of players. The course is very hilly offering many great views and only walk able for the very fittest of players. I would rate Tower Ridge a 7.8 on a 1-10 scale as I deduct some for courses that can't be played on foot by the majority of players. This being the 3rd year in a row I have played the course I of course would recommend it to any golfer as a fun course to play and will keep coming back until I get a ball on the green from the tee on the long par 3 eighth hole (240/230/220/213) hitting through the trees downhill to an uphill green.
Leading the way on this fine golfing day was Fredo with a 84 (5 pars and only one double bogart), next up was myself with a 99 (hit the best 7 iron ever on 18 getting to 3 ft for the birdie), then chipping in was Mike with a 103 who had the chip of the day on 6 chipping in for a birdie, Phil played to a 107 with one par and a great second nine improving by 6 strokes (and thanks for riding with my Pop!), Walt the newest golfer in the group shot a 127 improving on the second nine by 7 strokes, and shooting 7 under double par was Jimbo at 133.
After golf we all enjoyed some good bbq food at the club's restaurant that was very reasonably priced along with a few cheap brews. Kudos and thanks as always from the group to DaHacker for getting the tee times and reservations for dinner.

A great day in Woodbridge and evening in West Haven, CT
July 15, 2009:
For the first time (I think for everyone in the group??) we played 18 holes at The Country Club of Woodbridge. The crew consisted of Larry "there is no course too long for me" Bodick, Gary "the Joke Man" Ramadon, Noel "Petey O'Phfile" Gabriele, Mike "Okinawa Joe" Ricci, Jimbo "DaHacker/Double Par" Polony, Fred "the Mayor" Mayernik, John "Mr. Concert " Onofrio, Dave "who thanks God everyday that he has some Taylor (Mom) genes" Polony, Mike "who can't remember his score...." McQuade, and Walt "the new golf junkie" Baker. The course which for the first time is now open to the public was in great shape. The course has an interesting layout with shared tees, lots of hills, typical New England trees and topography, water on a few holes, great bunkers with soft white sand, and lightning fast rolling greens.. We took advantage of their weekday special of all you can play after 3 p.m. for $40 with a cart. The course normal weekday rate is $65 plus cart so it is a higher end course. As it just went public it is in a transition from private club to a public course the course is missing some amenities and/or staff to make it truly higher end but I can't say anything bad about the course itself or the shape it was in. I would rate the course a 8.5 and look forward to seeing how the course is managed over the next few years.
Leading the way was LB with a great score of 81, right behind him was FM with a 82, then GM scored a 90, DP chipped in at a 100, the N with a 101, JO with a 107, MR with a 113, JP at 4 under double par at 138, and then MM and WB must have shot worse than Jimbo as they couldn't seem to recall their scores. I'm sure they had better results than DaHacker as isn't that why most of us average golfers golf with him? And for the Larry, Gary, and Fred type golfers it must just be pity?
After the fun on the course we all headed over to Mike's place for steaks, salads, and drinks which all were great and were enjoyed by the entire crew. Thanks to Jim and Mike for cooking, Mike and Carol for having us all over at his home, Jimbo for shopping and organizing the dinner and tee times, and an attaboy for me for suggesting playing Woodbridge when I saw their special price. A fun day and evening was had by all even if I couldn't get one iron shot to stay on the greens.......

A small outing at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, CT
July 8, 2009:
Jimbo "DaHacker" Polony, Dave P, Mike Ricci Sr, along with Gary Ramadon played 18 holes and enjoyed food/brews at the 19th at New Britain's Stanley Golf Course. The N and his Shitkorsky buds played on July 6th and left the course pretty much intact and when we described him to the Beer Airhead it was clear she remembered him from Monday when she asked: "He's not here again, is he?"......
Our golfing was done on a gray cool day that could be best described as a nice April day. Golf conditions was a wet course from frequent rains that have made CT seem a bit like Seattle the last 6 weeks. While not a great weather day the golf was fun and the company good. Leading the way was GR with a 86, yours truly shot a 107, MR chipped in with a 110, and Jimbo came in at 9 under double par with a 135. A fun day on a fine reasonably priced public golf course that I would recommend to anyone looking for a course in the central part of CT. I would say the course is a 7 on the 1-10 scale.

Nine holes at the Giant
July 1, 2009:
JO, DP, and DaHacker played nine holes without the N who bails at the last minute (mental note to myself if I ever organize a Golf day can't count on the N to show after saying he'll be there) on what turned out to be a beautiful evening here in CT after a day of showers and rain. JO led the way with a 47, I shot a 49, and JP came in with a 60.

Two foursomes play 18 at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford, CT
June 24, 2009:
Fred, Mike McQuade, Mike Ricci, DP, Jimbo, Walt, George Derbabian, and Phil Tortora made it out to West Hartford, CT to play 18 holes at Rockledge and then enjoyed the food and grub at the restaurant on the course. Rockledge is a classic New England course that truly looks like it was built to the land and is a fine playing course for all skill levels. Yours truly can say nothing but complementary adjectives to describe the course and would rate the course a 8.5 on a scale of 1-10. With all the rain had here in CT the last month the greens still were fast and pretty true and the course was wet in low poor draining areas.
The scores:
Fred lead the way with a 87 (44/43) coming in with 5 pars. Yours truly shot a 98 despite my ineptitude using the wedges, Mike McQuade chipped in with a 102, Phil played to a 105, Mike and George shot 108, Jim DaHacker edged out Walt with a 135 to 134 for high score retaining his moniker as DaHacker. I would say the course is pretty well laid out with no surprises from the tee box and only on a couple 2nd/3rd shots a little course knowledge would be beneficial when deciding on the shot to attempt or club to use. After the round the entire crew enjoyed very respectable grub and brews at the 19th. Another fine outing, thanks to our organizer Jimbo for his efforts to get us off a week later after being rained out last week.

the Gang plays 18 at Peqout Golf Club in Stonington, CT
June 10, 2009:
Noel, Jim, Walt, Mike McQuade, Fred, and Dave went on their first 18 hole Golfing Magazine certificate excursion for 2009 traveling close to the RI border to Peqout Golf Club in Stonington, CT. Peqout is a short, par 70, golf course in the south east corner of CT with most holes favoring good shot making giving the good golfer the opportunity to shoot a good score by using all of their clubs and shots. Course features several holes with dog legs, narrow fairways, and sloping greens making the holes play true despite being on the short side. Overall this reporter enjoyed the course, the price of beer can't be beat at the 19th with $10 imported pitchers, the staff was extremely friendly, and overall it was a great first 18 hole Connecticut golf outing. I would rate the course a 7 on a 1-10 scale and would recommend to play for if you are in the Stonington area.
Now for the results:
Fred tore up the course shooting a 81 (40/41) with 6 pars, 1 birdie, with his worse hole shooting one double for the day, kudos Fredo.... Noel shot a respectable 101 with one blow-up hole putting him over 100 and using the Lord's name in vein under 100 times. Yours truly shot a 102 also like Noel had one blow-up hole (a 10). Mike plays to a 110, TheHacker shot a 125, and Walt came in with a 127 (stay out of the sand next week Walt...). This reporter would say he played mediocre with some good holes, good shots and a couple holes that can best be described as dreadful. Playing the course I wish I had more information on distances to the turns on dog-legs, distances to brooks the crossed the fairway, and info about what was around the greens. But I would say once you played the course a few times you would learn how to play the course and wouldn't have these complaints. After golf we stayed at the course restaurant for some grub and brew which was good and reasonably priced. A fun day on the course and at the 19th!, thanks to our organizer, Jimbo, for putting together another fine day!

Sorry JP, not under 60 this time at the Giant
June 3, 2009, DaHacker is back! Jimbo's streak of sub 60's ended with a high score of 69. Joining JP was Mike R shooting a 51, JO with a 47, and yours truly DP with a 40.

May 22, 2009, JP breaks par at Sleeping Giant
Explanation maybe required? Anytime going forward that the DaHacker breaks 60 or 120 is a good day thus he breaks JP par! JP shot a nice 57, way to go Pop! Leading the group was yours truly with a 45, Mike Sr. edged out JO shooting nice scores with a 48 and 49 respectively.

Las Vegas - April 16-23, 2009!
Noel, Jim, Fred, John, Walt, and Dave visited Sin City for the first time as a group and this reporter can say we had a blast. The trip consisted of bowling in the USBC National Tournament, three great rounds of golf, a trip to the Hoover Dam, an excursion to Red Rock, and plenty of food, drinks, gambling, and good times with friends. The bowling tourney as usual had tough scoring conditions with the usual results = low scores! On the bright side yours truly did cash in the singles event shooting in the 590's (waiting for my big check!). The gambling as usual I would say I think we left a bit of $ in Vegas. The strip joint that Jim and Noel went to got high marks and that evening the rest of us went downtown and truly had a good time needing Fred to drive us back to the hotel. The weather was great the entire trip!
Golf began on Friday, April 17th at the Angel Park in Las Vegas. The course was a nice start to our trip being likely the easiest course and the least interesting of the three courses we played. The course has some interesting features like a real grass 18 hole lighted mini putting golf course and a nine hole short course that has short versions of famous golf holes which is also lighted for night play. We played the Palm course in the daylight with Fred leading the way shooting a blistering 80, yours truly DP came in with a nice 92, the N with a respectable 99, JO shooting for the first time in 2009 with a 102, Walt chipped in with a 109, and DaHacker hacked in with a 116. Highlight at the 19th was Jim heckling a wedding party and the cold brews!
Next up in the golfing on the trip was Aliante Golf Club in North Las Vegas which we played on Monday, April 20th. This course was a step up in quality and really nice course playing much longer than Angel Park. Leading the way again was Fred shooting a great 83, with Noel shooting a very nice 93, I came in with a 95, Walt shot 103 (nice round!), JO came in with a 106 (not bad 2nd time out in 2009), and Jimbo you were truly your name shooting 2 under double par with a 140. The highlight of this round was playing in the group with JO and Noel as we went out first and had enough time at the 19th for 2 rounds of brews before Jim finished letting Fred and Walt off the course!
And the concluding round was played on our last day in Vegas on April 23rd at The Legacy Golf Club in Las Vegas. I think the group would agree that of the 3 courses this one was the best in conditions and interest. The course was well manicured with lush fairways and fast true greens. I broke 90 for the first time shooting a 89 which was a nice treat to finish the outing with not a one mully! Fred came in with a 92, Noel consistent as usual with a 93, Walt with another nice round at 102, JO struggled a bit with a 111, and JP improved by 9 strokes shooting a 131. The course was fun as was the 19th but no JP stories for this 19th...
Overall I want to say Kudos to my Pop on booking the 3 courses at a great price! And kudos to organizing the entire trip as well, I know I had a great time and I think I can speak for the group and say thanks and it was fun time with good friends! Look forward to the next time.....

September 25, 2008 - Fox Hopyard, a real nice course and restaurant. Had a large group with 4 foursomes and sorry to say I did not get all the scorecards. So lets just say everyone played well and it was good time had by all! Definitely recommend the course especially at the price we paid! Till 2009 this was the last "outing" so hope everyone has a good off season and finds some nice warm places in their travels to play before its nice here in CT!

September 5, 2008 - The 9th Annual West Haven Community House (WHCH) Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of Gene McCarthy. The tournament was held at Alling Memorial Golf Course in New Haven, followed by an awards reception and dinner at Foxon Country House. John played with his foursome and Jimbo, myself, and Fred played with another gentlemen (sorry name escapes me?) and played to a decent score in scramble but nowhere near the top. It was a lot of fun, a real nice day, a nice dinner, and all for a great cause. Look forward to playing it again next year.

September 2, 2008 - Quarry Ridge, 18 holes, tee time: 10:40 am
The N, myself, JP, and JO played 18 holes at Quarry Ridge. Highlight of the day was when on the same hole both myself and JO tee'd off and hooked the tee shots that subsequently ended up rolling down the hill/cartpath back to the tee. 200+ yard drives turned into 5 yard drives yahoo! Leading the way with a 95 was the N, with myself at 101, JO with a 105, and JP hacked it up shooting 122.

August 28, 2008 - Squidder, DaHacker, yours truly (DP), the-N, Dan-the-Man, G-Liquor, and Larry-Boatshoes headed up to finally get our 18 holes in at Tower Ridge Country Club in Simsbury, CT. The weather was ideal, the company good, the course in great shape, the greens terrific fast and true, turning out for a fun day on the course. Kudos to Dan-the-Man leading the way with a 89 beating his regular Thur golfing buddies G-Liquor and Larry-Boatshoes who both came in with a 91, next was the Squidder with a 94, then the N with a 97 and the record for number of times using the work FUCK on one whole while playing the 18th, then yours truly with a 99 while being handicapped by an injury inflicted by little kids who bruised my ribs yeah what a tough guy getting beat up by a 5 and 7 yr old gang tackle! And then there was DaHacker who truly lived up to the moniker with a tough day shooting a 139 trying to regain the old nickname of DoublePar as par was 70 and I may be going out on a limb here but he may have shaved a stroke or 2 off that score? Also adding to the enjoyment of the last hole I think my Pop was trying to recreate Tin Cup while plunking 4 or 5 balls into the Lake right before the green. Watching from the clubhouse it was truly a comedy act with DD blasting a drive of 300 yards off the tee making par with his side kicks the N using the F word so many times and loud enough to hear from 3/4 of the way up the fairway and DaHacker donating golf balls to whoever gets them when they dredge the lake. Following golf the crew journeyed to Hartford to _______ (sorry don't remember the name of the restaurant) for some good eats (awesome homemade potato chips!) and good drinks, and good fun! Another fine, memorable, golf outing...........

August 21, 2008 - FM, DP, JP, JO, MR Sr., and Dan the Man Gray played nine holes at Laurelview Country Club. Dan warmed up on a beautiful afternoon playing the back nine then joining us on the front nine holes (JP wanted to walk and we didn't want to kill him playing the back nine!) and then for chow and poker at JP's place in West Haven. Leading the way was FM with a 42, then DG coming in with a 44, DP with a 46, JO with a 48, MR with a 49, and JP with a 54. It was fun time on the links as always! Then after golf we retired to Jim's place for steaks, salads, and corn courtesy of FM and plenty of drinks courtesy of JP. If Memory serves correct the big winners at poker were DG and MR who took about $10 of mine which was great considering my start and a decent chunk out of FM's wallet as well. Thanks to FM for the food and thanks JP for cooking (excellent job on the steaks!), supplying us plenty of drink, deserts, and just a nice evening at the Polony West Ranch.

August 14, 2008 - FM, DP, JP, and JO of Freeport along with 2 4-somes of Shitkorsky (present/former) gents headed up ny the N and Jim Pellitere took our annual trip up to Groton, CT to play Shennecossett Golf Course. It was a beautiful August day at what can be described as a true links course right here in CT that can be played for a mere $29 after 12 during the week. It's definately a fun, one of a kind course here in CT and always worth the trip. The course played true to links golf with lots of bunkers, hard fairways and greens that played very fast and true. The only aspect of our day playing links golf that wouldn't be normal back in Scotland, England, or Ireland was the hour plus delay of play due to lightning in the area. Playing in the last of our groups the Freeport 4 finished up at approximately 7:45 as light was becoming scarce. Leading the way was FM with a 86, JO and DP both shot 100, and JP came in with a 126. The N and Jim both shot in the low to mid 90's for their rounds on a fun filled day. After playing the group enjoyed a good meal, good drinks, and great company in the course's full service restaurant and bar. Look forward to doing it again next year!

July 30, 2008 - The "N", Jim Sandman Pellitere, da Hacker, and yours truly (DP) were the only 4 who were able to enjoy 18 holes at Tunxis Plantation in Farmington, CT. We played the White course which can be described as a nice course to score well on with nice big fairways and most of the course right in front of you with nice fast greens. Leading the way was Jim Pellitere with a 95 and 4 pars, the N came in shooting a 96 with 4 pars as well, DP chipped in with a 97 also with 4 pars, and hacking his way to a 114 JP finished strong on the back nine improving by 8 strokes. It was a nice fun afternoon on the links and while not the most interesting course its well cared for and in very nice condition and would recommend playing Tunxis. I can say the 19th hole is very well worth staying for a beer or two and some food.

July 24, 2008 - RAIN and Lots of it postponed our 18 holes at Tunxis until July 30th. The weather turned dry in the afternoon and 5 of us (MR Sr., MR Jr., FM, JO, and DP) got in 9 holes at Laurelview Country Club in Hamden, CT. Thanks to its higher location and well drained course it was able to open while Sleeping Giant could not until the following day. Turned out to be a nice albeit humid evening on the back nine holes at LV. Leading the way with a 43 was yours truly (DP), with JO playing well shooting a 49, FM came in with a 50 as he couldn't shake off the rust or da Hacker's spirit invaded his body on 2 holes where he did a nice impersonation of JP with a couple holes he will quickly forget, MR Sr. chipped in with a 52, and MR Jr. also rusty not playing in quite some time shot a 58. A good nite of golf was capped off with chow and good company at Chili's.

July 16, 2008 - With other commitments or ailments most of the regular crew was unable to play this week but 5 us did get for nine holes of fun at Sleepy and grub and drink at Aunt Chiladas to end the evening. Myself (DP) , da Hacker (JP), Pearl Diver (DD), were joined by first timers this year Walt Baker and Mike McQuade. Pearl Diver showed not playing much this season hasn't hurt his game shooting a 37, Mike and myself shot 47, JP played to a 58, and Walt who is in his rookie season shot a 68. Author's prediction is Walt will be beating da Hacker by next season or sooner! Course was in fine shape, the weather was good, the drink was cold, the food tasty, and the company excellent. Good to see Walt, Mike, and Dennis as it's been a while since I have seen these gents and hopefully they will be able to join us on some of our future weekly golfing. Look forward to next week at Tunxis!

July 9, 2008 - Another fine day of golf, grub, and beer was had by all at Rockledge Golf Club in West Hartford, CT. This day's crew was comprised of da Hacker Jimbo Polony, Don "ok I'll admit it I work with Noel", the N Gabrielle, John aka JO Onofrio, Jim the good SAWX Fan Pellitere, the GolfFanatic Danny Gray, Mike Okinawa Ricci, and the yours truly reporting DP. This was my first time playing Rockledge and I must say I would highly recommend it to fellow golfers with fast greens, plush fairways, a nice mix of long and short holes, well established trees, and a very fair course overall. You can tell the course has been around for many years and was built to take advantage of the land it was constructed on, it's not tricked up in any way and the holes all have good sight lines. The weather was good, a hot and humid day but with the carts not a problem playing except maybe for the Hacker? We did have a delay for potential of lighting in the area for about 30 minutes or so which most of the course followed except for our first foursome (Don, Jim, Jim, and Noel) who claimed not to hear the horns and played on and for one of the rare occurrences a foursome with my Pop in it finished well ahead of the other group! Leading the way was Sikorsky Don with an 80, then Dan came in with an 89, yours truly shot a 90 which I must say surprised me!, Jim Pellitere was next with a nice score of 91, The N also played to a nice score but was low man of the Sikorsky contingent with his 92, Mike chipped in with a 106, JO was one behind him at 107, and then there was da Hacker who came in with a 133. Highlights of the round were Don with a birdie on 15 and 10 pars, DP with 5 pars, Jim Pellitere and Noel with 4 pars, Mike and JO with 2 pars, and da Hacker finished! The round was capped off with a fine meal, good drinks, and good company at the restaurant on site. I would also recommend but be warned its a bit pricey. Definitely would make Rockledge a course I would play at least once a year! Looking forward to our next outing....

July 2, 2008 - Noel a.k.a. the "N", Dan the Man Gray, Jim da Hacker Polony, John MoparMan Onofrio, Gary Ramitdon, Jim "the SandMan" Pellitere, and yours truly played 18 holes at Blue Fox Run in Avon, CT. It rained prior to our tee times at half past noon but the day's weather was perfect for July in CT. Blue Fox is a nice course which recently added 9 holes with a total of 27 holes . We played the red and white nine hole layouts and I must say I would definitely play this course again and look forward to returning next year as the course with its new holes and layouts mature. Leading the way shooting 88's were Dan and Gary, the N shot a very nice 91, the SandMan found as many bunkers as he could and deftly got out of them shooting a 95, yours truly came in with a 101, MoparMan chipped in with a 106, and da Hacker maintains that high score wins thus he was the big winner of the da with a 131. And an editor's comment: I played in the foursome that tee'd off first with the N, the SandMan, and MoparMan and for the first 9 holes the 3 gents playing behind us were right with us the all 9 holes. Then on the back nine we didn't see them at all except on parallel fairways where we noticed they had a fourth. An attractive young lady joined them on the white nine holes and I guess they slowed down because she was slow? No she kicked JP's butt! Me think the boys we a bit distracted and slowed their pace a bit to enjoy not only the course but the sights of mountains, hills, and other undulations..... After golf we enjoyed a good meal and drinks at the 19th which I would also recommend and it was here where we in the first foursome got to see what, or I should say who distracted them causing them to finish a good 20 minutes after (tee times are only 8 minutes apart!) us. Another fun time at the course was had by all! Looking forward to next week at Rockledge....

June 25, 2008 - Noel, Mike, Fred, Jim, John, and Dave made their way to Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, CT. While dodging heavy rain that hit other areas of the state we only were sprinkled on during the course of our 18 holes of fun (well for some!)... Leading the way was Jim with an awesome 140! Fred after a slow start shot a nice 89, Noel chipped in with a 97, John played a good round at 99, Mike came in with a 107, and I hacked my way to a 109 (so when are these lessons I'm taking going to help not hurt my scores?...). But while my game sucked it was a nice afternoon on the course and with our golf certificates well worth $15 to play a nice muni course. After our round we had grub and drink at yours truly place here in Prospect and played cards well into the night where the N who claimed not to know how to play won $$$. Highlights of the night were Jim and his mysterious arm pain? Cured by what you say? Jack Daniels of course..... Noel winning Texas hold'em (no more help from Ricci when I go all in N!) and then running out of steam at the end of the night and retiring to the couch leaving the game before we were done playing. But regardless of not winning at cards it was good to have the boys over for the evening and look forward to doing it again in the future.

June 18, 2008 - Jim, John, and Dave played nine holes at Sleeping Giant Golf Course in Hamden, CT. While we had to endure a passing shower on hole 5 it was a fun evening of golf and eats with good friends. Without FM making it due to a sore groin (that what she said!) or waz it the back? DP lead the way with 7 good holes and 2 others shooting a 46, JO did the same playing 7 great holes and 2 other shooting a 49, and the Hacker shot a 57. John had a great hole number 3 with a birdie 2 and DP had a great hole number 8 with a birdie 3. Both also had a par each on 8 for JO and DP with his par on 6. JP's best holes were bogeys on 1 and 9. Look forward to next week playing 18 at Stanley on Thursday the 26th!

June 11, 2008 - Jim, Fred, John, and Dave played nine holes at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, CT. We played the back nine on a slow but enjoyable evening on the links with FM leading the way with a great 42, JO shooting a very good 48, DP in with a 52, and JP hacking to a 60 using the JP system of golf mathematics :>) I must say that JO, FM, and myself thank the big guy for deciding not to take Jimbo away to the great beyond, but it sure was touch and go on a few of the holes whether or not we were going to need a table for 3 or 4 at Chilis after golf! So my tip of the week for my Pop is get a cart the next time we play Laurel View! Because plain and simple none of us are EMT's nor do we have supplemental oxygen or a defibrillator in our golf bags!!!

June 2, 2008 - Mike, John, Jim, and Dave played in the 2008 West Haven Fire / Police Tournament held at the Tradition Golf Club in Wallingford, CT. The tournament was held to raise money for the family of Ralph Russo. Read the New Haven Register article about the tournament by clicking < HERE >. They couldn't have gotten a nicer day for a golf tournament with a spectacular sunny day around 80 degrees. It was a good turnout for a good cause. It was a shotgun scramble so we started on hole 12, the island green par 3 hole, not the best starting hole but thanks to J.O. who stuck the green with his nine iron and also made the birdie putt we were off to a great start! Throughout the day we had some other great shots like Mike's great 250 yd dead down the middle drive on 6 or his great 3 wood hitting to the end of the island fairway on 17, John's nice drive on 16, Jim's short game played well on a few holes getting us par, and I had a couple nice drive with the best coming on 10 a short par 4 playing 286 where I belted one 275 right in front of the green but unfortunately we only managed a par (DOH!). And of course we also had a few shots best not remembered....... We ended up +2 for the tournament and I would easily say the short game was our downfall and the 2nd gin and tonics after the bloody mary and numerous beers didn't help our score :>) as between the 4 of us we always got off the tee pretty well on the par 4's and par 5's but I think we were only good for one other birdie and we weren't able to birdie any of the par 3's after 12 which was disappointing since none of them any harder than 12! And Congrats to my Pop leading the way with 8 or more balls lost! Well I must say it was a very fun day and fine day of golf for a good cause.

May 28, 2008 - Jim, Fred, and Dave played nine holes on an outstanding late Spring evening at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, CT. Could not have asked for a nicer evening weather wise where we played the front 9 holes and were joined by a nice young man Josh who recently moved to CT from Virginia (what was he thinking?). Fredo led the way with a nice 43, DP with an erratic nite off the tee thankfully putted decent shooting a 51, and the Hacker came in with 5 good holes with 2 pars and only 7 over for those 5 but on the other 3 was 13 over doubling or more par on those 3 in route to a very good 58 (just gotta get rid of those blow up holes Pop!).

May 25, 2008 - Mike Jr up for the long holiday weekend joined Mike Sr, Jimbo, and Dave for 9 early holes at Woodhaven Golf Course in Bethany, CT. I think we all have had the displeasure of playing Woodhaven's greens where if you bring a faulty putter and short game into the greens you are screwed. Jr hit the ball well leading the way with a 51, yours truly shot a horrific 58, Sr came in with a 60, and the Hacker shot a 62. While the saying is true a bad day of golf beats a good day of work and I'll stick to that any day of the week especially spent with good friends and family. It was great having Mike Jr up for the weekend joining us on the links and playing cards Thur nite (sorry bout my luck getting over to you once I was out!). Look forward to the next time we see Jr in the area and get to play together again. And Good Luck on the impending nuptials come October.......

May 22, 2008 - The Freeport CT 5 all got together to play nine holes at Sleeping Giant Golf Course in Hamden, CT. Playing in between some intermittent showers and sun it was a nice late afternoon of golf and then later we enjoyed Italian grub and cards at Mike's place where we were pleasantly surprised to have Mike Jr. join us for the festivities. Nice thinking by JP getting a card and cake for Carol's birthday, great job Pop! Who says all the brain cells aren't firing? Nice shooting by FM who led the way at +5 with a 40, yours truly (DP) came in with a 47, JO shot a 52 sinking a nice 20 footer for par on the 9th hole, MR shot a 54 with a nice 90 degree treewood on hole #3, and JP played 7 holes really well and 2 really poorly totaling at a 56.

May 15, 2008 - John "the happy to be out of the office accountant", Jim "the hacker", and Dave "the aspiring golf reporter" joined Dan "the Man" Gray, Dennis "the Squidder" Douchette, and Noel "Lewis Black" Gabrielle at Hunter Golf Course in Meridan, CT. The six gents played 18 holes on a fine May day here in Southern New England. The course was in fine shape and is a fine value for golfing in CT. Leading the way was Dan with a 85, the Squidder shot a 89, Lewis came in with a 94, DP played a great first nine at 45 but blew it on the second 9 with a 51 for a 96 total, JO was the opposite shooting 6 better on our second nine holes with a 50 for a total of 106, and the Hacker broke 120 with a 119 shooting 11 strokes better with a 54 on his second nine holes (see there's hope for you Pop!). It was a great day of golf followed up by a nice meal at the restaurant on the course which can't be beat for cuisine on a Public golf course. Look forward to our next 18 hole outing scheduled for first week of June and 9 holes next week as it was a good time had by all!

May 13, 2008 - Fred and Dave play an enjoyable 9 holes at Sleeping Giant Golf Course in Hamden, CT. It was one of those beautiful May days here in CT and combined with a course in great shape made for an enjoyable night of golf. Shooting a pair of 43's Fred and Dave both had some very good shots and holes. Here is to a good evening and hope other Freeport members can join us for our next golf outing. Hope JO and Mike played well in their league on this Tue nite (feel free to email your weekly scores and I will post them on the site if you like).

April 26-May 3 >> John, Jim, and Dave invade Myrtle Beach, S.C.!!!
April 27, 2008 - Our first day of golf was played at Possum Trot Golf Club where I must say an enjoyable round can always be had a very friendly course on the strand. Not your most challenging course but for 3 guys who played a total of 9 holes prior to this day its more than challenging enough and I would recommend it to any group looking for an opening trip round, a closing trip round, any round for that matter as the staff is friendly, the course is pretty open and in nice shape. This was our second time playing here and would definitely make it our opening day course again! For our opening rounds of the trip DP shot a 106, JP shot a 123, and JO shot a 126.
April 28, 2008 - We made our first trip to the West Course at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The West is one of 3 18 hole courses at MB National and was an enjoyable second day of golf. This was the only day we saw rain which held off for us until the par 3 finishing 18th hole on which J.O. had a great shot off the tee sticking the middle of the green! For the day DP shot an even 100, JO shot a nice 110, and JP chipped in for a 127
April 29, 2008 - The Freeport Trio played King's North at Myrtle Beach National in Myrtle Beach, S.C. This course is always ranked in the top 20 course on the Grand Strand and features several memorable holes. One of the memorable ones is called the Gambler, hole 6, a Par 5 where off the tee you can gamble to try and reach in 2 by going for an island fairway or you can play conservative and stay right on the land bound fairway. Well the hole was this author's highlight hole with a dead straight 250+ yards to the end of the island where from 147 out stuck the green, a long way from the flag albeit and of course ended up 3 putting for a par (damn got work on that putting!). There are several other great holes on the course including hole 12 a short par 3 island green where of course I 3 putted again! And the 18th finishing hole is lined with 38 bunkers from tee to green and water on the right side near the green. I managed to avoid all the bunkers but not the water and came home with a bogey (damn water!), and the other guys had a rougher time with this stout finishing hole both taking 9's. For the round DP shot a 99! JO chipped in with a 124 and JP managed a 129.
April 30, 2008 - Our first morning round of the trip where we tee'd off about 9 a.m. at River Club a very nice course on Pawleys Island, S.C. As the name implies water is in play on much of this course and I was happy to only donate 3 balls on this course, you have to ask the other guys what their contributions were but I think I low balled them on contributions. DP chipped in with a 104, JO shot a 117, and JP shot a 133.
May 2, 2008 - We played Willbrook Plantation which is a very picturesque golf course located in Pawleys Island, S.C. We tee'd off at 8:08 a.m. and since we stayed at North Myrtle Beach had to rise at 6:00 a.m. This was the only day we had a single join us for our round so "Ed" had the misfortune of riding in JP's cart. Ed a retired senior from P.A. played from the Gold Tees so we suggested that Jim do the same as he is a senior and we thought the cut down in yards would improve his score. Unfortunately the advantage of hitting from the gold tees did not translate to better score for the Hacker but I'm sure Ed had plenty of stories to tell his regular golfing buddies about playing with my Pop and how John the CPA almost killed him when JO toed one off the tee. It was a close call but luckily the old guy still was alert and able to dodge the white sphere of death! And of course the old guy beat all of as he was a straight shooter (by all means the key to this f'ing game!) and a good putter. For the Freeport hackers DP shot a 103, JO fired a 106, and JP hacked his way to a 127.
May 3, 2008 - The Freeport trio play Aberdeen Country Club in Longs South Carolina. We played the Meadows and Woodlands sets of nine holes. Our front 9 we were started on Meadows course which was the shorter of the two nine holes and played slightly more narrow to start and then opens up a bit but adds water hazards on holes 6-9 all of which I believe at one or more of Jim's balls. For the Meadows DP shot a 51, JO also shot a 51, and JP putted along for a 59. Then we played Woodland course which was situated in some South Carolina wetlands and nature habitat. Water is in play on 8 of the 9 holes and again JP I believe hit the water with at least one ball on each hole. For the back nine on Woodland DP shot a 51 for a total of 102, JO shot a 59 for a total of 110, and JP shot a 70 (and that was as high as the calculator would go!) for a total of 129. This golf concluded a great trip of Golf and Good Times with Good Friends.
Editors Note:
Ranking of the 6 courses we played by me would be:
Kings North, Willbrook, Aberdeen, MB National West, River Club, Possum Trot
And I would recommend any of the courses to play as they were all nice and enjoyed all of them without any reservation. And from the deal they were offering I would likely be a member at Possum Trot where it was like $500 and you could play there along with 4 or 5 other courses. And its my kind or course pretty straight forward with wide fairways and not a lot of bunkers or water to screw you.....
Hope all of Freeport can join us for next years trip where we are destined for Las Vegas for USBC Bowling tournament, Golf, Gambling, Drinking, Hookers, etc....
Remember what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!

April 17, 2008 - Freeport crew got together for the first time to play golf together in 2008 at Orange Hills Country Club. Dave, JO, Mike Sr., and Jim "the hacker" were joined by the Dan the Man, Dennis the Menace aka the Squidder, and Noele Canole aka Lewis. Author believes it was the first official golf for all 7 duffers on this April day where we played the back 9 holes and could not have had better weather for April in CT. Leading the way was Dennis with a 44, Dan shot a 52, Mike and Dave both hit 58, Noel came in with a 60, John with a 61, and Jimbo with a 63. It was great getting out for the first time!

October 26, 2006 - Freeport returns to Orange Hills
The Freeport CT crew returned to play nine holes at Orange Hills Country Club and on this day the boys not only fought the course we also fought the weather which was at best a nice winter day. Starting the round the temp was around 50 and it quickly dropped into the forties with winds gusting to 25 m.p.h. making for a nice winter round of golf. On this final golfing night of the season (clocks back to standard time) it was just the 5 of us playing which at least made for a quick 9 holes with FatchaGaloop and Beam going out on our first tee time shot scores of 62 and 59. Flintstone, GiddyUp, and MoparMan closely followed the senior Freeport members using the next tee time and we put a request in for a ranger but could not find one on this cold day as the old timers easily could have been fined for slow play if they were on the PGA tour. Flintstone led the way with a 49, Giddyup shot a 51, and MoparMan chipped in with a 62. A fun 9 holes of golf was followed by the Freeport meeting at MoparMan's place who along with his familia graciously hosted a good evening of business, pizza, drinks, cards, and camaraderie.

October 19, 2006 - Freeport plays 18 at Western Hills Golf Course
Beam, Flintstone, GiddyUp, and MoparMan played 18 holes at Western Hills in Waterbury, CT. Joining the CT Freeport crew were friends Mike a buddy of Fred who has played with us on many occasions, Michael Fred's nephew, Freeport favorite "The N!" and Art one of Noel's buddies from Sikorsky and all 4 of these gents are always welcome to golf with the Freeport crew. Being the first time this author has played the course I would say it has a nice layout, its name is appropriate as there are many hills, the greens were in bad shape, and the price was good. Overall I would play again as the prices are good, the course was nice, the greens hopefully a victim of late year play here in Northeast, and the restaurant/bar was good as well.
Now to the results: Flintstone of course led the way with a 88, GiddyUp chipped in with a 104, MoparMan stroked a 115, and Beam hacked his way to a 120.

Sept 28, 2006 - Freeport plays Orange Hills
Beam, GiddyUp, MoparMan and FatchaGaloop played nine holes at Orange Hills Country Club for the first time as a group. We played the front nine and the course and weather both were in great shape for golf. Leading the way was GiddyUp with a 53, FatchaGaloop chipped in with a 56, MoparMan shot a 61, and Beam hacked his way to a 66. Gents then had a good meal and short business meeting at OTB seeing old buddy John tending bar. Good time as always.

Sept 21, 2006 - Freeport hits the road and plays Topstone Golf Course
All of Freeport CT and Freeport TX played 18 holes at Topstone Golf Course in East Windsor, CT. The Freeport CT 5 were joined by SilentMan who was in town for business and The N! also joined us on our golf road trip to Northern CT. Leading the way was Flintstone with a 84 followed by TheN! with a 98, GiddyUp with a 108, MoparMan with a 112, Beam with a 118, and FatchaGaloop with a 122. The course was well worth the price combined with the weather and company a better day of golf could not be had..... well I would have liked to actually get of the tee with the Big Dog without endangering anyone but that's another story.

Sept 6, 2006 - Freeport plays longtime favorite Laurel View
Beam, Flintstone, and GiddyUp played the front 9 at Laurel View Country Club in Hamden, CT. It was a tough evening for all 3 gents with even FM struggling to find his touch shooting a 50, GiddyUp played everywhere but the fairways shooting a 58, and Beam improved by a stroke week over week shooting a 68. While the scores weren't all that good it still was a great evening of golf, food, and grog. As I always say better than work or bowling! Can't wait for next week!!!!

Aug 30, 2006 - Freeport shoot 9 at Tradition Golf Club
The boys play the front nine holes at Tradition Golf Club of Wallingford, CT. After seven straight days in which rain has fallen at sometime or another the course was soggy but the weather was great for golf on this last Wed afternoon of August. Flintstone lead the way shooting a nice nine holes coming in with a 43, GiddyUp was runner-up with a 49, FatchaGaloop pitched in with a 63, and Mr. Double Par Beam hacked in with a 69. While the crew lost a few balls to spongy fairways and overgrown first cut of rough it was a fun afternoon of golf and good food afterwards. As always look forward to the next time the crew gets out.....

Aug 23, 2006 - Freeport plays Quarry Ridge for 1st time
Freeport traveled to Portland, CT to play 18 holes at Quarry Ridge golf course for the first time and enjoyed a beautiful day and course. Quarry Ridge is a course that like its name implies is built on a former site of a rock quarry with a wide variety of holes with elevated tees, greens, sloping fairways, and tree lined holes. The course has spectacular views and scenery with well cared for greens, fairways, and greens. I would recommend the course has a great place to enjoy a round at a reasonable price. Leading the way this week was GiddyUp shooting a 98 recording his first birdie of the season on the 14th hole! Moparman chipped in with a 109 with pars on the 18th and 7th with some very impressive long putts! FatchaGaloop close behind MoparMan played to a 111 and Beam hacked his way to a 124.

Aug 16, 2006 - Freeport hits the links at Hunter
The Freeport CT 5 and friends (Dan and James) hit the back nine at Hunter Golf Course in Meridan, CT. It was the first time this year that Freeport has played the back nine holes and for the second week in a row we had great weather for golf. Leading the way as usual was Flintstone who had his worst week of the season only shooting a 46 which the other 4 gents in our group would be very happy shooting! Flintstone will work on his game and return on the 30th to try and shoot that elusive score in the 30's. GiddyUp was pleased with his score of 50 considering he played from the right side of the course most of the time. MoparMan and FatchaGaloop chipped in with a 63 and Beam had a great 18 hole score of 71 which is par for Hunter's 18 holes, too bad he only played 9! That's getting your money's worth!!! Another good time, good eats, and good fun was enjoyed by all!

Aug 9, 2006 - Freeport returns to Woodhaven
Beam returns from his 2 week holiday in the islands joining GiddyUp, Flintstone, MoparMan and friends playing 9 holes at Woodhaven Country Club in Bethany, CT. It was a perfect evening for golf in CT where we are in a nice little stretch of perfect weather with nice sunny dry days in the low 80's and nights in the 60's. The weather was great and so was Flintstone's golf! Flintstone led the way shooting a 41 with a birdie on the first and on the 9th hole in almost darkness. GiddyUp chipped in with a 53, Moparman stroked a 59, and Beam hacked his way to a 61. As always a good fun evening playing golf was had by the Freeport crew who were joined by a few of our buds (the N!, Jim, and Dan) brave enough to join us on the links.

Aug 2, 2006 - Freeport plays 9 at Lyman Orchards
Beam still in the islands misses the most tropical day and evening in CT in years. FatchaGaloop, Flintstone, GiddyUp, and MoparMan play 9 holes on the hottest day in over 3 years in CT with the temp still at 94 and dew point at 76 at 5:38 p.m. (hit 100 earlier) when the foursome tee'd off the front nine holes on the Jones course at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, CT. Nine holes later and many bottles of water Flintstone led the way with a 42, GiddyUp shooting a 54, MoparMan and FatchaGaloop chipping in with a 59 and 63 respectively. The foursome played a couple more holes with daylight dwindling as Lyman offers an all you can play special of $20 with cart and then we made our way to the Wallingford 99 for burgers and beers. A good evening of golf, food, drink, and friends...... Looking forward to next week at Woodhaven

July 26, 2006 - Freeport returns to Hunter
With Beam down in the islands with his wife, daughter, and grand daughter enjoying the beach for a change (unlike when he is on the beach on the golf course where he starts shaking when he hits from the beach!) and I'm sure some tropical drinks the remaining 4 CT golfers returned to Hunter Golf Club for 9 holes of fun. Flintstone, FatchaGaloop, Moparman, and GiddyUp played the front 9 holes of this very good and inexpensive CT Muni's. Flintstone lead the way with a 43, GiddyUp followed with a 56 (man I butchered that one par 3 killing the round), Moparman chipped in with a 61, and FatchaGaloop shot a 2 over 67. Gents will try again to get a little closer to Flintstone next week at the Jones course at Lyman Orchards.

July 19, 2006 - Freeport takes a road Trip!
Beam, GiddyUp, FatchaGaloop, and our bud the N took a road trip to Groton, CT and played historic Shennecoseett Golf Course. Rated in the top 50 of U.S. Muny's that can be played for under 50 bucks and this reporter would agree that the course is a great play for the price ($27 18 holes, $41 w/cart) and would recommend it to anyone. Course has some challenging holes and greens and many that the mere mortal golfer can par or birdie. The N lead the way with a 102, GiddyUp shot a 111, Beam and FatchaGaloop shot 125, 126 respectively. Course has some really picturesque holes with the 16th and 17th having spectacular views of the Thames river bay. To see some pictures of the course go to www.shennygolf.com.

July 14, 2006 - CT Weekly Golf Night
For the second week in a row our weekly game was played on a Friday evening as a result of tornado warnings (one actually hit Greenwich) and severe thunderstorms and rain in the area. So the Freeport crew went out to Bethany, CT and played Woodhaven Country Club playing 9 holes of less than inspiring golf. It was great to have SilentMan join us as he was in town for business and was able to spare a few hours to play 9 holes. You know it was a less than stellar performance by the participants as Beam led the way with a 58, GiddyUp shot a horrible 62 donating many balls taking at least 10 penalty strokes for all those lost balls, SilentMan and MoparMan were just a tad worse shooting 64 and 67 respectively. It was a tough nite on the links but as always a fun time spent with friends.

July 7, 2006 - CT Weekly Golf Night
Our usual Wed nite game was moved to Friday to accommodate another round of rain resulting in a great late afternoon and evening on a Friday playing golf at Lyman Orchards Golf Club in Middlefield, CT. Beam, GiddyUp, MoparMan, and FatchaGaloop along with the N and his crew played 18 holes on the Gary Player course at Lyman Orchards known as the Black Knight. The weather couldn't have been better but as always with this bunch the golf could have been better! Regardless of our scores as always we had a helluva good time on the course enjoyed the challenge and company. Leading the way this week was GiddyUp with a 105, MoparMan with a 107, FatchaGaloop fresh off the I.R. list shooting a 117, and Beam hacking his way to a 119.

June 14, 2006 - CT Weekly Golf Night
Week two of Freeport's regular golf game was played at Hunter Golf Club in Meridan, CT. After missing a week due to rain it was great to get out a swing the clubs (even if it was poorly in the case of this author). As usual Flintstone was the star shooting 40, with FatchaGaloop coming in with a 57, Beam chipping in with a 62, GiddyUp shooting a 63, and MoparMan with a 67. Joining the Freeport 5 were one of Fred's friends Mike and our good buddy Noel Gabrielle a.k.a. Neil, Neidamier, Nick, etc. who both are more than welcome to join us anytime we play! Good Guys and both Fit right in with us bastards. The weather was great and as always a great evening on the course and a great meal followed at the restaurant at Hunter which is a definite recommended place to eat/drink!!!

May 7 - 13, 2006 - The 2006 Freeport Open
The Freeport Open was a handicap event with an overall and daily pairs competition. Overall champion for the week was Flintstone with each day having a doubles winner. All of the details day by day are below (all scores below are scratch):
May 7th - Possum Trot Golf Club, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Freeport Open begins! Beam, Flintstone, GiddyUp, and MoparMan make the trip from CT to SC and arrive on May 6 playing their first round on Sunday May 7 at Possum Trot. It was great to get out for the first day of golf playing what was the easiest course of the week. The course was well kept, the staff was friendly, we saw no Possum but we did see some Fox, and Raccoon Squirrels. The winners of the day were Flintstone (100) and Moparman (126) defeating GiddyUp (115) and Beam (127).
May 8th - Arcadian Shores Golf Club, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Day 2 of the event was played at Arcadian Shores, a Ress Jones course, that can be described as a classic golf course featuring 2 holes rated in the Myrtle Beach dream 18. Course was a step up in difficulty from Day 1 with scores reflecting this for the high hcp trio but Flintstone shaking off the dust off his game or loosing up those muscles was able to improve by 8 strokes from Day 1. The course would compare to the Tradition in Wallingford in difficulty and design. The winners of the day were Beam (120) and Flintstone (92) defeating MoparMan (117) and GiddyUp (124).
May 9th - Man O War Golf, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The third day of the Open was played at Man O War Golf course, a Dan Maples design, that can best be described as a course you never would see up here in the with visible water on every hole which comes into play on 16 of the 18 holes. The course features several approach shots to the green over water and hole number 18 completely surrounded from the beginning of the fairway to the green by water, The course was definitely a fun one and a ball eater for us inaccurate players but to the more skilled player the water shouldn't be a problem with fairly wide fairways and receptive greens. This author had a great time at this course until I went to pick up a ball from my moving cart (a move I won't repeat again!) and promptly pulled a muscle, damn it sucks getting old!. This is one course I couldn't compare to any I have ever played in CT. Winners of the day were Flintstone (91) and GiddyUp (125) defeating Beam (126) and MoparMan (126).
May 10th - Arrowhead Country Club, Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Day 4 brought the group its toughest challenge playing Arrowhead Country Club, a Ray Floyd signature course, that can be described as a higher end course with tight fairways and lots of water. The course has 27 holes on which we played the Cypress and Waterway sets of 9 holes for our 18. This day brought Flintstone played his best golf of the trip in this opinion of this reporter shooting 11 over for an 83 with 8 pars, 9 bogeys, and one double bogey, Kudos to Flintstone for a great round!! The other 3 duffers struggled here donating a good number of balls to the water around this one. Winners on this day were Flintstone (83) and GiddyUp (127) defeating Beam (129) and MoparMan (133).
May 11th - The Witch Golf Course, Conway, S.C.
The fifth day brought us to Conway, S.C. about 20 minutes north of Myrtle Beach to play the Witch, another Dan Maples designed course. This author enjoyed this course the most of the 7 played as it was off the beat and track tucked back in a natural wooded wetlands setting complete with gators, turtles, and other various wildlife. Playing here was like being in the woods alone with the course away from civilization, very tranquil and relaxing. From hole to hole there is over 1/2 mile of wood bridges taking the golfers over and through the wetlands on a more forgiving course than Day 4 which was a welcome change for the 3 hackers in the group! The day's winners were GiddyUp (114) and Beam (121) who defeated MoparMan (115) and Flintstone (DNF - 44 through first 9) who had to stop playing after 11 holes due to injury of one of his forearms (again a case of it sucks being old!). Of the 7 courses we played for the week I would want to play here again the next time I am in Myrtle Beach.
May 12 - Tradition Golf Club, Pawleys Island, S.C.
Day 6 of the Freeport Open took the group the Tradition Golf Club on Pawleys Island. A beautiful course and club house that can be described as what an old traditional southern golf course would be with immaculate conditions and pleasurable experience from start to finish. Flintstone was able to play on what was a beautiful Friday leading himself (87) and MoparMan (112) to victory over Beam (124) and GiddyUp (DNF) who was unable to play after 6 holes due to back pain. Even not being able to play I would definitely like to play at this course the next time in Myrtle Beach as I stated it was a beautiful course with great conditions and a bargain for the courses on Pawleys Isle. After we played the course the 4 duffers on the recommendation of one of the staff enjoyed a great meal at a restaurant (name escapes me???) on the Intercostals just north of the course.
May 14 - Farmstead Golf Links, Calabash, N.C.
The final day of the Freeport Open the 4 duffers played their final round of the trip at Farmstead Golf Links just North of the border with half of the course on N.C. side and the other half on the S.C. side of the border. The course is a links style course and played like it with good amount of winds and conditions you may find on a course in the Old Country played by locals. Not overly difficult or easy but lots of fun featuring the 767 yard Par 6 18th hole that starts in S.C. and ends in N.C. The day was a fun conclusion to the trip with Flintstone leading the way with a 84, MoparMan and GiddyUp shot 111, and Beam chipped in with a 113. Over the course of the week the 3 hacker improved a bit and Flintstone improved significantly after day 2 showing who the golfer was in the group.
Summary -
Flintstone wins 2006 Freeport Open!! GiddyUp, Beam, and MoparMan are basically even with their scores and lack of skill (but I think they are improving a bit...) and lots of enthusiasm for the game.
Great Trip!
Great Golf!
Great Friends!
I look forward to our weekly golf back at home over the summer with the four contestants, FatchaGaloop and other cohorts we can get out with us for our golf fix..... And I look forward to next year when we all get together for the 2007 Freeport Open in Reno/Lake Tahoe along with bowling in the Nationals, gambling, drinking, eating and one day of playing cowboy riding some horses around the Lake with the crew!!

April 20, 2006 - Bethany, CT
Woodhaven Country Club, Beam, Flintstone, and GiddyUp play their first 9 holes of the official golf season here in CT. Spring is finally here and it was a great day to play golf with sunny skies and temps in the 70's. For those unfamiliar with the course Woodhaven is a challenging 9 hole course tucked of Rt. 67 in Bethany near the Seymour and Woodbridge town lines. The course is made up very hilly terrain where after the first hole you rarely have a flat lie the rest of the way with greens that best can be described as tough! As generally is the case when Flintstone is able to join the crew he easily beat GiddyUp and Beam as well as our fourth Mr. Gray who bowls with Moparman and GiddyUp. Flintstone shot a nice 45 playing for the first time at Woodhaven with GiddyUp shooting a lousy 59 and Beam bringing up the rear with a 62 surviving his hike up the hill on #3 making it all the way to the end without requiring CPR. Despite playing poorly this author had a great afternoon playing with his Freeport cohorts as is always the case. Beats working!!

March 11, 2006 - Hamden, CT
Sleeping Giant Golf Course, Beam, Fatchagaloop, and GiddyUp get out for an early season (it is early here in CT!) tune-up playing 9 fun holes on a beautiful Sat morning. The weather was great for March with the sun shining the temp made it into the low 60's. It was a typical start on the easy par 3 for the partners all hitting ground balls off the tee (we even got our fourth, another Jim, to do the same) with FatchaGaloop winning hole number one. From there GiddyUp shot par on 5 of 8 holes (don't ask about the other 3 holes) to win the day's match with a 47, with FatchaGaloop shooting a 55, and Beam a 60 (scores from memory so I apologize if I'm off by a stroke). But in reality Beam was the winner as he walked all 9 hole and we didn't have to get an ambulance!!! As always a fun time spent with friends and family and we look forward to doing it again as soon as the weather actually turns to Spring here in CT.
