Good day on the course - despite the heat; $25 cert price
made this an excellent value Course was brought back into service in the fall 2016 after closing and being over grown. It has been brought into very good condition since reopening. Front & Back nines have been reversed. White tees have been shortened a lot to 5700 yards with blues at 6600. This led to difficulty in layup distances off some tees. Presume shortening course was to draw in more average golfers, but a set of tees at ~6000 yards would be desirable. Reported by AceMan |

Temps mid 80's , high humidity, mostly cloudly with a couple beaks of sun - 5 minute down pour on front nine, thunder & lightning on last two holes - downpour 20 minutes after we finished (~4 hrs) rendering course unplayable and cancelling evening league - bright sunshine on drive home. |

| 19th Hole | 9 | Recalling our prior dining adventure at the course restaurant - ~1 hour to get served with Lays chips appetizer as compensation - we decided to opt for the convenience of dining at Back Nine Tavern (under new management, partnered with Southington CC). After some initial trepidation getting a server and the first cold pitcher on the table, service was good and the meal tasty. A good variety of apps, burgers, sandwiches, personal pizza and full dinner meals was available. Most opted for the personal pizzas. |

Overall the day gets a 9 rating, and was enjoyed by all. Carts had a GPS and scoring system although we had some difficulty transitioning from the White to Red course. October 22, 2015 - Laurelview Country Club, Hamden, CT
Another solid weather day was granted to our group on this golf day. The group on this day was Gregg theAceMan Wright, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Stan theMan Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Dave theSnyper Hughes, Phil theThrill Tortora, Mike McBogey McQuade, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
This was our group's third time at Laurelview this season and the course was in good shape except for most of the sand traps which were rock hard and in need of an infusion of new sand.
Leading the way on this day shooting 89 were AceMan (45/44, 4 pars) and Bomber (43/46, 6 pars), next in was yours truly with a 90 (44/46, 5 pars), theSnyper chipped in with a 93 (45/48, 5 pars), theMan played to a 104 (51/53, 1 par), daHacker (51/56, 1 par) and McBogey (52/55) shot a 107, and theThrill finished with a 110 (55/55).
After golf the crew headed down the road to Sergios in Hamden for Italian food and cold brews. Another fine day on the links with good company topped off with fine food and friends.
October 15, 2015 - Southington Country Club, Southington, CT
A sunny day with bright blue skies with temps around 65 made for a perfect fall day for our golfing on this day. Our crew on this day was Danger Dan Gray, Gary Gmoney Ramadon, Thunder Dan Fairchild, Noel theN Gabrielle, Gregg theAceMan Wright, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Stan theMan Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Primavera, Duffer Dave DeFlumeria, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Southington is a nice New England course tucked into a typical CT neighborhood that this golfer would recommend to anyone playing golf in Central CT. The greens are very sloped from back to front and with fast speeds making it important to stay underneath the flag. Overall the course was in excellent condition with the back nine being tighter than the front with tree lines making it important to stay on your own fairway to score well, several holes border public streets, and several border private homes with their backyards and pools literally feet from tee boxes and greens. The course dates back to 1922 when it was originally built as nine hole course and was expanded to 18 years later with several improvements in recent years such as the BackNine Tavern. The course sports 4 sets of tees as follows: Blue 5932/67.8/122, White 5685/66.8/121, Gold 5037/64.5/111, Red 4898/69.3/123. The course's length is not an issue and you are rewarded much more for accuracy off the tee, approach shots under the holes, and your short game.
Leading the way on this day shooting 86 were AceMan (46/40, 2 birdies, 6 pars), Dangerous (43/43, 6 pars), and BleedBlue (44/42, 6 pars), next in was Thunder with an 89 (43/46, 5 pars), Gmoney chipped in with a 90 (48/42, 2 birdies, 2 pars), Duffer (49/45, 4 pars) and Bomber (44/50, 1 birdie, 2 pars) both shot 94, theN (48/48, 3 pars) and theMan (47/49, 3 pars) played to a 96, and daHacker finished with a 117 (60/57).
After golf a good part of the crew enjoyed brew and chew at the Back Nine Tavern on the course where the beer was cold and the food was tasty. Another fine day on the course and it was good to have some of our non regular buddies join us on this day.
October 8, 2015 - Alling Memorial Golf Club, New Haven, CT
A overcast yet warm October day made for a nice golf day in the hood. The gang on this day was comprised of Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Stan theMan Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Bob "PrimeTime" Primavera, Dave "theSnyper" Hughes, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Alling is a nice municipal course that is well maintained with nice lush fairways, good tee boxes, and fast true greens. The course has a good layout and is surprisingly picturesque for a course located in the hood of New Haven.
Leading the way on this day theSnyper with an 86 (42/44, 8 pars), next in was theAceMan with a 90 (47/43, 6 pars), theMan (47/48, 5 pars) and Bomber (49/46, 3 pars) both played to a 95, BleedBlue chipped in with a 97 (49/48, 2 pars), next in was PrimeTime with a 99 (49/50, 3 pars), and daHacker finished with a 113 (57/56, 2 pars).
After golf AceMan, BleedBlue, daHacker, and theMan headed to Guilio's for some drinks and italian food that was enjoyed by our small crew.
October 1, 2015 - Woodhaven Country Club,
Bethany, CT
A cool overcast Thursday was the weather backdrop
for 9 holes in Bethany, CT. Our group on this day was Gregg
"theAceMan" Wright, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Stan theMan Magda, Jim
daHacker Polony, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri, and Dave BleedBlue
Polony.
Woodhaven is a nice 9 hole course in the woods in Bethany, CT close to Seymour that is a nice challenge for a 9 hole course where my one tip would always be try to stay under the hole on your approach shots as most of the holes are sloped with some of them being severely sloped from back to front. On this very fall day in CT the course was in good shape with very slow greens.
On this day Bomber played to a 47 (1 par), Stan shot a 52, the AceMan played to a 43 (3 pars), BleedBlue shot a 42 (4 pars), daHacker chipped in with a 52 (1 par) and Duffer finished with a 59.
After golf BleedBlue, daHacker, and Duffer headed to Woodbridge Social which I would recommend if you are looking for a place to eat in the Amity area where they have good food and drink with a good happy hour.
September 24, 2015 - Rockledge Golf Club, West
Hartford, CT
September weather finally takes hold here in CT and we had a
fabulous day with partly sunny skies, temps in the 70's, and light
breezes for our round in West Hartford. On this day our group
consisted of Stan the Man Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Duffer Dave
DeFlumeri, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Big Joe Walukiewicz, Phil theThrill Tortora, John YergerMeister
Yerger, Mike McBogey McQuade, Dave "theSnyper" Hughes, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Rockledge is one of this golfer's yearly favorites and on this day the course did not disappoint with great conditions from tees to greens. Tee boxes, fairways, and areas around the greens were lush, the traps had nice fluffy sand, and the greens were quick and true. I always describe Rockledge as a classic Northeastern park like course with a nice variety of holes that is superbly maintained where if you play well you will score well. Other aspects of the course that make it stand out is you won't find a municipal course with nicer or cleaner facilities such as the bathrooms on the course or the club house with has a top rate restaurant.
On this day YergerMeister led the group with an 88 (46-42, 6 pars), next in was theSnyper with a 91 (44/47, 5 pars), BleedBlue (45/47, 5 pars) and Bomber (48/44, 6 pars) both chipped in with 92's, McBogey shot a 93 (45/48, 3 pars), theMan played to a 98 (47/51, 4 pars), theThrill (51/51, 1 par) and Duffer (50/52, 2 pars both shot a 102, daHacker played to a 111 (55/56, 1 par), and Big Joe finished with a 115 (63/52, 1 birdie).
After golf most of the group enjoyed brew and chew and the 19th capping off a great day at the Rock!
September 17, 2015 - Hawk's Landing, Southington, CT
On this day it was overcast but warm and humid making for a good summer golf day. Our crew on this day was Stan the Man Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri, Bob "PrimeTime" Primavera, Thunder Dan Fairchild, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Phil theThrill Tortora, John YergerMeister Yerger, Mike McBogey McQuade, Dave "theSnyper" Hughes, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Hawk's Landing is a course that is best described as a quirky par 70 course. On this day the course showed signs of a tough summer with spotty areas of damage from the lack of water but overall very playable. This course will never be one that this golfer would say is a favorite with it's noise issues on a lot of the holes along with many of the quirky holes.
On this day leading the way was Thunder with an 87 (42/45, 3 pars), YergerMeister chipped in with a 88 (43/45, 2 pars), next in was Bomber with a 90 (43/47, 4 pars), theMan chipped in with a 97 (48/49, 3 pars), PrimeTime played to a 98 (52/46, 2 pars), Duffer also played to a 98 (46/52, 1 par), McBogey shot a 102 (55/47, 1 birdie, 3 pars), theThrill came in with a 105 (55/47), daHacker shot a 108 (49/59), and BleedBlue withdrew after 12 (42/16, 1 birdie, 1 par).
After golf most of us enjoyed brew and chew at the 19th which I must say was one of the best 19th holes of the season with good prices and good food.
September 3, 2015 - Manchester Country Club,
Manchester, CT
So I lost the scorecards from our trip to Manchester
this year so my apologies as no scores will be posted. I do recall
it has a hazy, hot, and humid late summer day and the course was as
usual in excellent condition. A favorite course for this golfer to play
every year and it did not disappoint. The one memorable moment
of my round was on the 2nd tee box when Bomber's shot off the tee
was a low worm burner that proceeded to hit the red globe tee box marker
splitting it in half sending it and his ball straight up in the air for
what seemed like a minute before the tee marker first and the ball coming down just off the tee box.
Ahhh golf just when you been playing for a while and think you have
seen every possible shot good or bad there still are millions more
to see and on occassion you come away with a story.... I look forward to playing Manchester next season.
August 27, 2015 - Twin Hills Country Club, Coventry, CT
Picture perfect day for golf! Temps in high 70's, blue skies with
puffy clouds, not a drop of humidity, and light breezes was the
weather backdrop for our round in Coventry. Our crew on this day was
comprised of Stan the Man Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, Bomber Bob
Fraedrich, Big Joe Walukiewicz, Bob "PrimeTime" Primavera, and Dave
BleedBlue Polony.
Twin Hills is definately out in the country and is not a country club but a nice local course if you live in the area. I would not recommend the course if you have a lengthy drive or if you are looking for a nicely manicured golf course. Many of the holes are target golf holes where local knowledge is a benefit to shooting good scores as there are numerous dog legs and lay up holes.
Leading the way was Bomber shooting a nice 82 (40/42, 2 birdies, 5 pars), next in was PrimeTime with an (88, 40/48, 2 birdies, 4 pars), BleedBlue chipped in with a 92 (47/45, 5 pars), theMan played to a 104 (56/48, 2 pars), BigJoe shot a 107 (54/53, 2 pars), and daHacker finished with a 115 (59/56).
After golf the crew headed to the Bidwell bar and grill in Conventry where the brew in chew was enjoyed.
August 19, 2015 - Tradition Golf Club of Wallingford, CT
On a day where our annual trip to Shenny fell apart due to circumstances I will not complain about in this report there were only 3 who played in Wallyworld on this day where it was hazy, hot, and humid.
Leading the way was ThunderDan shooting an 82 (40/42, 9 pars), BleedBlue chipped in with an 88 (41/47, 7 pars), and daHacker finished with a 108 (59/49, 2 pars). The course was in good shape on this day and the 19th was enjoyed by this small crew following our round.
August 12, 2015 - Country Club of Woodbridge, Woodbridge, CT
Again we take advantage of the $29 hump day special at Woodbridge where we had a good weather day with temps in the mid 80's, moderate humidity, and sunny blue skies. The gang of 6 on this day was Duffer Dave DeFlumeri, Jim "daHacker" Polony, Dave "theSnyper" Hughes, "Bomber" Bob Fraedrich, Mike McBogey McQuade, and Dave "BleedBlue" Polony. Hats off to Duffer and daHacker for playing all 18 on a cart path only day at this very hilly course.
Leading the way on this day was BleedBlue with an 87 (41/46, 6 pars), next in was theSnyper with a 90 (41/49, 4 pars), Bomber played in pain with a bad knee gutting out a 96 (48/48, 3 pars), daHacker had an excellent back 9 shooting 103 (55/48, 2 pars), Duffer chipped in with a 106 (49/57, 2 pars), and McBogey finished with a 107 (51/56, 1 par).
After golf 4 of us headed to 744 West for a good meal concluding another fine Wednesday afternoon.
August 5, 2015 - Hunter Golf Club, Meridan, CT
Weather = Excellent
Course = Excellent
19th = Excellent
Everyone's game = Excellent?
Outing = Excellent!
As stated above the weather could not have been better for August in CT and the course could not have been in better shape. The crew on this day consisted of Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Fred "Flintstone" Mayernik, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Jim "daHacker" Polony, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Mike McBogey McQuade, Thunder Dan Fairchild, Mark "theFriendlyGhost" Casparino and Dave "BleedBlue" Polony.
The course played as a par 71 with four sets of tees with the following numbers (yards/slope/rating) the blues 6573/131/71.6, the whites 6188/127/69.5, the golds 5666/123/67.9) and the reds at 5485/127/72.3. The course is always one of this golfer's favorites to play each year and could not have been in better shape than it was this year.
Leading the way on this day shooting 86 were Flintstone (42/44, 1 birdie, 5 pars), AceMan (44/42, 7 pars), and BleedBlue (43/43, 5 pars), next in was Thunder with an 88 (48/40, 1 birdie, 5 pars), Bomber chipped in with a 93 (48/45, 5 pars), theFriendlyGhost played to a 96 (47/49, 4 pars), daHacker finished with a 101 (50/51, 2 pars), McBogey shot a 108 (56/52, 2 pars), theGooseHunter finished with a 110 (58/52, 1 par).
After golf the crew stayed on at the 19th, Viola's where we had great food, great drink, and even better company. A great Wednesday!
July 22, 2015 - Laurelview Country Club, Hamden, CT
A fine weather day again for our weekly Wednesday outing with temps in the 80's, sunny skies, and moderate humidity. On this day our crew consisted of Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Fred "Flintstone" Mayernik, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Jim "daHacker" Polony, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri, Phil theThrill Tortora, Thunder Dan Fairchild, and Dave "BleedBlue" Polony.
Course was in decent shape quick true greens, some of the bunkers need help, and overall the course I would say rates an average municipal course that as long as you get a decent price I would recommend. The course has a nice layout and can be a good challenge for the best golfers when played from the tips at 6900 yards. Laurel View is a par 72 with 4 sets of tees with the following stats: Black 6900/74.0/136, Blue 6431/71.8/131, White 6005/69.0/129, and Red 5286/65.8/117. I would describe the course as a typical New England course with a variety of short and long holes, tree lined fairways, hills, and a bit of water to avoid.
Leading the was BleedBlue with a 92 (46/46, 1 birdie, 2 pars), next in was theAceMan with a 95 (47/48, 3 pars), Thunder chipped in with a 96 (48/48, 1 birdie, 2 pars), theThrill played to a 104 (50/54, 1 par), daHacker finished with a 109 (53/56, 1 par), Duffer recorded a 110 (56/54, 1 par), theGooseHunter finished with a 110 (56/54, 1 par), and Flintstone DNF as a result of injury after 4 holes but recorded 2 pars on his first 2 holes.
After golf the crew headed to Eli's on Whitney where the food and drink were good but overpriced in this reporter's opinion.
July 15, 2015 - Country Club of Woodbridge, Woodbridge, CT
Another scheduled day to play Blackledge where we opted to stay more local due to weather considerations and we lucked out on a stormy day in CT where it rained heavily in towns less than 10 miles away we were able to stay dry in Woodbridge, CT. Humid, overcast, with storms threatening, temps in the low 80's was our weather backdrop on this Wednesday where we played Woodbridge Country Club who was offering a $29 special for 18 with a cart. Our group on this day was Stan the Man Magda, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Jim daHacker Polony, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Fred "Flintstone" Mayernik, Mike "McBogey" McQuade, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Woodbridge is an 18 hole course with many unique challenging holes. The course is mainly tree lined with several uphill/downhill holes with a mix of long and short holes that overall plays longer than it measures. The par 71 course measures 6,550/6302/5391/5298 yards from the blue/white/yellow/red tees. It has a slope rating of 134/129/127/121 and a rating of 72.2./71.1/66.2/71.2. The 18 hole Country Club of Woodbridge was founded in 1948 and was a private for over 60 years. In 2009 the course opened up to the public and continues to be open to the public today. The course underwent a change in operations with Billy Casper Golf taking over 2 years ago and has made great strides in course conditions from the lows of MDM golf. The golf course has been the site of numerous USGA qualifiers and features classic Orrin Smith greens and elevation changes of nearly 300 feet. On this day the course was in good shape with true greens and overall no complaints.
Leading the way on this day was Flintstone with an 88 (43/45, 3 pars), next in was BleedBlue with a 91 (45/46, 1 birdie, 4 pars), Bomber chipped in with a 92 (47/45, 5 pars), theAceMan played to a 100 (50/50, 3 pars), next in was theMan shooting 104 (51/53, 2 pars), McBogey played to a 109 (54/55), theGooseHunter shot a 113 (55/58), and daHacker finished with a 116 (56/60, 1 par).
After golf we headed to the Bear Grille on Rt 1 in Orange where we enjoyed the cold brews and tasty sandwiches.
July 8, 2015 - Blue Fox Run, Avon, CT
A hot, humid day with a brief shower on hole 1 for our first group making for typical summer July day here in CT was our weather on this Wednesday. The crew on this day was Thunder Dan Fairchild, Stan the Man Magda, Phil theThrill Tortora, Jim daHacker Polony, Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri, and Dave BleedBlue Polony
Blue Fox is found along the Farmington River, in the shadows of Talcott Mountains, featuring 27 holes that allow for three distinct 18-hole layouts. Some holes have the classic New England style tree-lined fairways while others are open and reminiscent of links golf. Some holes at Blue Fox Run gave you ample room off the tee, while others require more shot making skill, with smaller greens and extensive bunkering. On this day we played the short combination of Red-White courses which are pars 34/36 respectively with totals for yards/slope/rating from the black tees at 6205, 123, 70.1, from the blue tees at 6010, 122, 69.1, from the white at 5397, 113, 65.9, and from the red at 4703, 121, 68.08. The Red course is definitely short and quirky with the White course playing longer with a couple of tricky greens especially hole number 1. On this day the greens were true and medium fast, the fairways were lush, sand traps had ample sand, and the tee boxes were also very good. Hopefully next year we will get to play the Blue/White but as always Blue Fox Run is a fun course where if you are playing well you can shoot some low numbers. The bugs were prevalent on in the White course and the lack of drinking water were this golfers complaints on an otherwise fun to play course.
Leading the way on this day was this reporter who avoided any TinCup moments this week and found the fairways most of the day shooting an 85 (41/44, 1 birdie, 5 pars), next in was Thunder with an 86 (42//44, 6 pars), AceMan played to a 91 (1 birdie, 3 pars), theMan chipped in with a 103 (49/54), Duffer (49/55, 2 pars) and theThrill (55/49) both shot 104, and daHacker finished with a 114 (57/57).
After golf the crew headed to First and Last Tavern where both the Brew & Chew were excellent and this group would recommend and return in years to come.
July 1, 2015 - Goodwin Park Golf Course, Hartford, CT
Our first return to Hartford's Goodwin Park Municipal Golf Course after many years we had a great weather backdrop with sunny skies, temps in mid 80's, and moderate humidity. The crew on this day was Thunder Dan Fairchild, Stan the Man Magda, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Mike McBogey McQuade, Jim daHacker Polony, Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
After numerous repairs, the Goodwin Park Golf Course reopened in June of 2014. Goodwin is one of two Hartford golf courses that suffered neglect after an outside management company failed to make hundreds of thousands of dollars in required improvements, according to city officials. The city severed ties with the Wallingford-based MDM Golf, which for years had poorly managed the Goodwin and Keney Park golf courses. Hartford abandoned its longtime practice of privatizing the golf courses in favor of a not-for-profit model. Officials signed a contract with the Professional Golfers' Association of America, Connecticut Section, to oversee operations at Goodwin Park Golf Course. The company now helps manage the course and provides consulting services. Hartford also has entered into a contract with Gilmette Golf LLC, which will serve as the Goodwin course superintendent, and a contract with Cloud Nine Golf Co., which will provide a golf pro. Gilmette has hired workers through the nonprofit KNOX, a civic improvement group, to help with course maintenance. Keney Park also was closed after being mismanaged for years by MDM has undergone massive improvements and is scheduled to reopen later this year. For an in-depth article about Hartford's courses and their revival please go and read the article on MassLive.. On this day the course was in good shape with medium speed true greens, lush fairways, bunkers with ample sand, and tee boxes that were in good shape as well. The improvements made over the last 2+ years definitely showed as the course is back to being a good municipal course that Hartford can proudly claim where we will gladly return to play again next season. Here's to hoping Keney has similar success with it's revival.
The Goodwin Park Golf Course is a 27 Hole facility on the border of Hartford and Wethersfield. The Championship course measures just over 6000 yards from the back tees and plays to a par of 70. Golf has been played on the 120 year old park since 1906. The North course measures 2500 yards, has a par of 35 and is a perfect course for beginners and those looking for a quick nine. The course has 3 sets of tees: Back Tees: Par 70, Rating-68.6, Slope- 119 Middle tees: Par 70, Rating-66.8, Slope-114 Front Tees: Par 70, Rating-69.6, Slope-109.
Leading the way on this day AceMan with a 90 (43/47, 6 pars), next in were theGooseHunter (41/51, 1 birdie, 4 pars) and Thunder (42/50, 1 birdie, 4 pars) shooting 92, McBogey chipped in with a 93 (48/45, 1 birdie, 3 pars), theMan played to a 95 (46/49, 3 pars), BleedBlue or on this day TinCup didn't see water that his ball wasn't highly attracted shot a 104 (54/50, 2 pars), and daHacker finished with a 118 (59/59).
After golf the crew headed to Dakota steak house where theGooseHunter's US Open pool victory was paid in full where unfortunately I do not believe anyone could honestly recommend this steak house where the steaks were very average in taste and very over priced. I think the group was unanimous in that we were pleased with Goodwin and not so much with our steaks......
June 24, 2015 - Orange Hills Country Club, Orange, CT
Another grade A weather day on this Wednesday for
our small group consisting of Mike FatchaGaloop Ricci, Jim daHacker
Polony, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, and Dave BleedBlue Polony played 18 at
Orange Hills while many of our regulars spent the day at Pro-Am day
at the Travelers PGA tournament in Cromwell.
The course was in good
shape with excellent tee boxes, fairways, reasonable rough, good
sand traps, and medium speed green. Orange Hills has three sets of
tees and measures out at Blue 6511/72.1/130, White 6115/70.2/124,
and Red 5616/72.7/122. Orange Hills as its name describes has
several holes that are played either up or down a hill with several
holes with dog legs left or right with 2 holes on the back 9 having
90 degree dog legs with trees protecting the corners making shots
off the tee requiring the correct length and direction to allow for
reaching the green in regulation. The course is one that is always
well maintained, one where you can find great deals during the week
to play, one that require accuracy off the tee, and it is local for
this reporter thus while it will never be a favorite it is one where
I will always play as long as the price is right.
Leading the
way was Bomber with a 86 (41/45, 1 birdie, 5 pars), next in was BleedBlue who chipped in
with a 93 (45/48, 4 pars ), FatchaGaloop played to a 107 (50/57, 1
par), and daHacker finished with
a 121 (60/61).
After golf we headed to 744 West in West Haven where
the brew and chew was tasty and reasonably priced.
June 17, 2015 - Quarry Ridge Golf Club, Portland, CT
The string of good weather continued in Portland with temps in the low 80's, sunny blue skies, and low humidity. Our biggest crew of the season made it the Quarry Ridge with 10 golfers making it out to Portland. The crew on this day was Thunder Dan Fairchild, Stan the Man Magda, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Jim daHacker Polony, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Fred "Flintstone" Mayernik, Phil theThrill Tortora, John YergerMeister Yerger and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
The scenic eighteen holes at Quarry Ridge are set among rolling hills and granite rock outcroppings built in 1993 on the site of a former rock quarry. The course overlooks the Meshomasic State Forest and the Connecticut River in Portland, CT. The course is well maintained with a more than friendly staff including an on course beer cart. The fairways were lush, narrow and were a must to hit in order to have a good day, the traps and tee boxes were in excellent condition, and the greens were unusually slow as Quarry's greens are typically on the fast side. The layout of the course demands accuracy over length and will eat up balls if you leave the fairways. The course has 4 sets of tees with the Blacks at 6389/70.9/124, Blues at 6049/69.5/119, Whites 5213/65.1/108, and Reds at 4852/68.7/117.
Leading the way on this day was my Tue nite teammate Flintstone with an 82 (41/41, 9 pars), next in was AceMan with an 85 (41/44, 1 birdie, 8 pars), Thunder played to a 90 (43/47, 1 birdie, 4 pars), BleedBlue chipped in with a 91 (44/47, 6 pars), YergerMeister (47/47, 3 pars) & Bomber (45/49, 5 pars) both shot a 94, theMan (48/49, 3 pars) & theThrill (48/49, 2 pars) both played to a 97, the GooseHunter chipped in with a 101 (52/49, 4 pars), and daHacker finished with a 109 (54/55, 2 pars).
After golf the crew stayed at the 19th where the beer was cold and
tasty with one nasty ass pitcher that if I could remember the name
of the swill I would warn all against the ass beer. The other
pitchers were good as was the food. Another fine weather and golf
day!
June 10, 2015 - Tallwood Country Club, Hebron, CT
A nice weather day in Hebron with temps in low 80's and sunny skies was our weather back drop for our round on this Wednesday. Our crew on this day consisted of Thunder Dan Fairchild, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Mike McBogey McQuade, Jim daHacker Polony, Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Course was in decent shape showing some areas of damage from the long winter and cold wet early spring here in CT. The course is the middle of over 200 acres of farmland and is a pleasant. relaxing, quiet, beautiful setting for a round of golf. The course has great practice areas and can boast about its very friendly staff. The course has 4 sets of tees measuring out at as follows: Black 6523/126/71.2, Blue 6374/122/70.1, White 6126/121/69.3, and Red 5424/126/71.9. The course has water in play on about half of the holes being especially prevalent on the back nine.
Leading the way on this day was Bomber with an 87 (41/46, 6 pars), next in were Thunder (40/52, 1 birdie, 4 pars) & BleedBlue (43/49, 6 pars) both shooting 92, theGooseHunter chipped in with a 94 (47/47, 1 birdie, 4 pars), McBogey played to a 106 (54/52, 2 pars), daHacker fizzled out on the last 4 holes with consecutive 8's shooting a 110 ( 47/63, 2 pars), and Duffer finished with a 118 (57/61).
After golf much the crew went to the 19th down the road at Blackledge for brew and chew. Another great weather day and fun golf day in the countryside.....
June 3, 2015 - Oaklane Country Club, Woodbridge, CT
As my buddy Fred said on the Wednesday it was a Chamber of Commerce day in Woodbridge with temps in the mid 70's, sunny blue skies, and not a hint of humidity making a perfect day for golf or any outdoor activity. The crew on this day consisted of Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Fred "Flintstone" Mayernik, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Mike McBogey McQuade, Stan the Man Magda, Jim daHacker Polony, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
The course was in excellent shape after a couple days of rain I would recommend this layout as one that drains well if you are looking for a place to play where other courses will be soggy. The course is player friendly enough to appeal to players of all skill levels but there are still several challenges in store as you navigate from hole to hole starting with the course's toughest hole #1 that requires a good drive in the fairway and an all important second shot. Numerous strategically placed bunkers lurk along the greens, towering trees frame most of the holes with occasional water hazards, fairway bunkers, fast undulating greens and thick rough that test your accuracy and short-game skills. A fun course that plays longer on many holes than the posted yardage and one that this golfer would recommend to anyone looking for a place to play in New Haven County area of CT.
Leading the way was AceMan with an 88 (48/40, 1 birdie, 1 par), next in was this reported with a 95 (50/45, 2 pars), Flinstone had a tough outing with a 100 (51/49. 2 pars), the Man chipped in with a 103 (53/50, 3 pars), next in was McBogey shooting a 107 (54/53, 2 pars), just behind him was theGooseHunter with a 110 (56/54, 2 pars), and daHacker finished at 120 (61/59).
After our round we stayed at the 19th where the brew was cold and delicious and our chew was hot and delicious. We all partook in some great dinner specials at $8 as they had over ordered for a function and we benefited with good meals at a good price. Another fun day on the course with good friends and on this day perfect weather!
May 27, 2015 - Timberlin Golf Club, Berlin, CT
A sunny, hot, humid, and windy May day with temps in the high 80's made for a fine day for our time on the links on this Wednesday. The crew on this day who made the trip to Berlin was Phil theThrill Tortora, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Gregg theAceMan Wright, Jim daHacker Polony, Bullet Bob Blauch, Duffer Dave DeFlumeri and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
Timberlin is classic New England course with tree lined fairways, water in play on several holes, and strategically placed bunkering. The course has four sets of tees playing as a par 72 with the following specs (yards/slope/rating) with the blues at 6797/127/72, the whites at 6342/126/70.2, the yellows at 5831/124/67.6, and the reds at 5472/121/71.7. Unfortunately this year Timberlin showed signs of a tough winter and early spring with damage likely from sitting snow and water on many of it's greens and fairways. Hopefully they can bring the course back to it's normal conditions from year's past as it has always been a favorite of our group.
Leading the way on this day was theAceMan with a 94 (40/44, 2 pars), next in was BleedBlue shooting a 96 (46/50, 3 pars), theGooseHunter chipped in with an even 100 (49/51, 1 par), theThrill played to a 108 (54/54), Duffer came in with a 116 (58/58), Bullet banged in a 118 (58/60), and daHacker finished with a 126 (66/60).
After our round we stayed at the 19th hole on the course where the food was tasty, the beer was cold, and the prices were reasonable.
May 20, 2015 - Portland Golf Club, Portland, CT
A brisk, sunny, late fall-like day with temps in the low 70's with wind was the weather back drop for this week's outing at Portland Golf Club. On this day our group consisted of Bomber Bob Fraedrich, Walt the GooseHunter Baker, Mike McBogey McQuade, Stan the Man Magda, Thunder Dan Fairchild, Jim daHacker Polony, and Dave BleedBlue Polony.
The course has 4 sets of tees with the following stats: Blue 6184/122/69.8, Gold 5989/121/68.9, White 5734/120/67.9, Red 4984/125/70.2. The course was in nice shape overall with true medium speed greens, nice tee boxes, well groomed traps, and tree lined fairways. The course favors the shot maker over the bomber and those with good knowledge of the course will have advantages on many of the holes with blind tee shots, dog legs on 7 holes, and hardly a fairway where you'll find a ball on a level surface. Not a course for those who like to walk unless you like getting in some good cardio with hills on almost every hole.
Leading the way on the day was Bomber shooting an excellent 84 (43/41, 1 bird, 5 pars), next in was BleedBlue with an 87 (46/41, 7 pars), ThunderDan's first time out had some good moments playing to a 93 (48/45, 3 pars), both theMan (47/49, 3 pars) and McBogey played to a 96 (51/45, 2 pars), theGooseHunter chipped in with a 105 (56/49), and daHacker finished with a 115 (58/57).
After our round we enjoyed brew and chew at the restaurant at the club house where the beer was cold, the food was enjoyable, and the prices were reasonable.
May 13, 2015 - Hunter Golf Club, Meridan, CT
A small crew of Bomber Bob, Phil theThrill, Flintstone, and the GooseHunter (105) played Hunter one of this golfer's favorites in CT on this Wednesday. A short report from theThrill (101) and Bomber (97) was the course was in good shape, they enjoyed the restaurant after their round, and a good time was had by the group.
May 6, 2015 - Laurel View Country Club, Hamden, CT
Our first outing for 2015 and the weather could not have been any better with the skies that became sunny and blue as we played our round with temps in the high 70's ! On this day our crew consisted of Stan "theMan" Magda, Gregg "theAceMan" Wright, Jim "daHacker" Polony, Dave "theSnyper" Hughes, "Bomber" Bob Fraedrich, and Dave "BleedBlue" Polony.
Course was in decent shape for early season with quick true greens, some of the bunkers need help, and overall the course I would say rates an adverage municipal course that as long as you get a decent price I would recommend. Laurel View is where this reporter learned how to play golf taking lessons from the head pro Ed Grant and it will always hold good memories for this golfer. I would descirbe the course as a typical New England course with a variety of short and long holes, tree lined fairways, hills, and a bit of water to avoid.
Leading the way was theAceMan with a 84 (42/42), next in was the Man at a 89 (46/43), right behind him was theSnyper shooting 90 (45/45), Bomber chipped in with a 96 (50/46), next in was BleedBlue with a 97 (50/47), and daHacker played 14 holes coming in with a 88.
After golf we headed to Aunt Chiladas down the road on Whitney Ave in Hamden where we celebrated Gregg's hole in one from a week ago on the 15th at Oaklane. Congrats Gregg!!! Thanks for the brews!
